<image:caption>Once again we see a new dynamic marking in measure 21. I would consider an overall decrescendo from the f to the mf and continuing a decrescendo to the mp in measure 24. Measure 24 to the end is similar in nature to the first few bars with long 16th note passages that you can easily cresendo through (because you have already been practicing your E major scale so notes shouldn’t be an issue!). Don’t let the intervals in measures 28 and 31 force you to play clipped notes, play everything full value and connected.Crescendo all the way to the poco rit and end on a strong low E for ONLY 3 eighth notes… it isn’t a fermata so don’t let the judges think you can’t count! The purpose of this etude is to show the judges you can play with a beautiful sound with good flow and expression. Tone should be number 1 priority, and any musical decisions you make should be confident and so clear that if a judge were to transcribe what you just played, it would be an exact copy of the part you just played. Feel free to reach out for a lesson, book here for either a half hour or an hour!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Music - Kentucky All-State 2020-2021 Bass Trombone Excerpt Bordogni 9</image:title>
<image:caption>Keeping this in mind, the next line has a similar rhythmic patter with long 16th note lines followed by dotted rhythms. On the long 16th passages you can play around with crescendos or decrescendos and see how this relates to your breathing. I side with whatever you can do that keeps the phrase long and uniterrupted. The beginning of the third line is an end of a phrase that picks up into a new phrase but at a louder dynamic level. That being said, I would structure the beginning to measure 16 as one long crescendo from mf to f. Within that feel free to add shape as stated above. The trouble with the third line is placing the grace notes. I would initially play these lines without the grace notes so I can hear the melody I am embellishing. After I am comfortable with the rhythm, I would add the grace note AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE to the note it is preceding to give the obvious change in character. We also have some half step motion here, where I would ask a student to lean into any note that has an accidental attached to it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With any kind of triple meter, I like to really be obvious with the dancing quality of a strong beat one and lighter beats two and three. The phrasing left to right keeps this from becoming boring and repetitive. Follow the lines up and down with crescendos and decrescendos accordingly. Feel free to mix it up by decrescendoing on ascending lines and crescendoing on descending lines. You’ll find that you aren’t as boxed in creatively as you might think. Meldoically, put some emphasis on F#’s as they are the leading tone to G, giving even more credit to the G minor sound. Also notice how the opening phrase keeps rolling, like it never seems to be a complete statement until measure 17. Keep this in mind, breathe where you need to, but try not to break the phrase. The second half of the etude starts on the B natural in measure 17 beat 3. Replacing the Bb with a B natural gives us a major sound. We can adjust our attitude to being more playful, as it also tells us to play legato. This is to contrast the leggiero (light) style from earlier. DO NOT SLOW DOWN THE TEMPO HERE! Just because it is softer doens’t mean it needs to drag. This second half is more sweeping and vocal than the first half. I like to imagine the first half as a cello (simialr to a Bach Cello Suite Gigue) and the second half a vocalise (think like the Bordogni). The second half shifts between a couple of keys, so be sure to have your intonation on point. This is soemthing I would challenge myself to. The intonation is ok, but I’m not making enough adjustments on some of the chord outlining.</image:caption>

<image:title>Music - Colby Norton Tenor Trombone Kentucky All State 2020-2021 Tyrell #11</image:title>
<image:caption>Here you should think of lowering the B natural a little to get it in tune with the G major sound it is outlining.</image:caption>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f456386035c2355dd857366/1600109057782-FCHTKBEGCSYB446BTZ76/Colby-Norton-trombone-ky-all-state-2020-tyrell11-3.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Music - Colby Norton Tenor Trombone Kentucky All State 2020-2021 Tyrell #11</image:title>
<image:caption>Again a G major sound leading into an A# diminished sound that could be derived from B major. Tuning needs to be precise to truly project this unique color shift. Trombones can only play single line melodies (traditionally) so it is on us to also think like a harmonicist that is trying to tune a chord. Pointing each note at a tuner and waiting for the green verification isn’t the same as playing a group of notes in succession and them being in tune with one another. We don’t use just intonation so a B in a B major triad is one place on the horn while a B in a G major triad is in a slightly different place on the horn.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Then gradually crescendoing (like notated) to the apex of the etude leading to the high Bb. Which in my take here, I hated! I gassed it up to much and it was unfocused and not short at all. Don’t fall into the trap thinking “here is my chance to really be loud. You’ll just make the same mistake I did. This top note isn’t as important as you think so just play it cool and with a good sound. The last phrase to the end is just a repeat with a few alterations of the beginning. I followed the same guidelines as before with my dynamics but added a crescendo to the last bar to make it feel a little more complete.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By crescendoing this passage and giving it a slight accelerando, it will appear more intense and faster than you are actually playing. Combining the two gives an illusion of a really fast accelerando that you can play comfortably. At the end, I used the least amount of valve changes I could, being on C tuba, it was a lot of lip slurring on 4th valve. For everyone using Bb tuba you can get away with 1-2 valve combo for most of it. This helps keep the line smooth as we lead into the last bar of leaps which by nature should feel rather disjointed and broken. Also, fight the urge to play the second 8th note of the slurred grouping short in the second to last bar. Think of phrasing like this</image:caption>

<image:caption>This will take you from the lowest note to well above the highest note you need. To me, playing low on tuba is our life, but playing high is where it gets scary both for accuracy and intonation. So over training the high stuff here will make the B natural seem easy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pic borrowed from Stephen Lange Some scores can seem like the first and second trombone and tuba do the gliss while the third trombone holds the Ab, but this clarification from Bartok himself lets us see what we are supposed to doing here. This is important as at first glance who holds the Ab and who glisses changes the texture and sound quite a bit from what Bartok truly intended. Play the gliss after holding the octave Ab for about 2 beats and gliss ALL the way to 6th position. This may take some time with intonation adjustments, so do not just assume you all are going to find F in 6th together. You are surrounded by Abs as he tuba and 1st trombone are sustaining so finding the octave and minor 3rd should be an issue.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Music - On Doubling… the art of balance</image:title>
<image:caption>First let's talk about what to play before we talk about what instrument to play You need to have a daily routine that no matter what happens in a day, you've at least done that. You can find some of my favorite routines for free below Dr. Chris Van Hoff (will ask you to download, sorry.) Toby Oft George Curran Dr. Denson Paul Pollard (some extra material required, excerpts, Charlie Vernon book, Marstellar) Dr. Micah Everett Ben van Dijk (for purchase) Buddy Baker (for purchase) Charlie Vernon (for purchase) Phil Teele (for purchase) Several of these routines use the same structure of long tones, lip flexibilities, tonguing exercises etc. The differences mostly lie in what order, tempo, rhythm and register. Furthermore most of these take less than a half hour to do which is great because you have other things you need to practice. The daily routine is a maintenance routine just making sure your fundamentals are in check.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Apply this pattern to all major scales Not only is this a great way to learn your scales (p.s. scales are still apart of the audition) it will put some quality time towards finger dexterity and precision. The second part of the equation is the tongue. You can practice tongue and finger coordination with the scale patter above, but you may also want to isolate the tongue with its own exercise. I like Hetzler’s exercise for clarity below.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Like the instructions say, play this three times soft at tempo 74, first time all air attack, second time with your preferred double tongue syllable, third time with your normal articulation. Once you are comfortable with the exercise, increase the tempo, but keep the dynamic at mezzo piano. Once you get the fundamentals in check, start applying them to the etude.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Music - Colby Norton Tuba Ky All-State 2020-2021 Tyrell 19</image:title>
<image:caption>I never get too loud because I personally don’t have good tone control in the louder dynamics on tuba. As for the roof top accents, I just put a little extra weight while keeping everything separated. You can play around with shape, but the phrasing is pretty repetitive so there isn’t a reason to overthink it. The most important thing to remember here is your practice of the scales and recognizing the patterns. Start slow and make sure each note is full of tone and clarity. A few spots in my run through of this had a few fluffed notes. I would go back and use the Hetzler exercise on this a phrase at a time. 1-3 bars air attacked, then again with the “too-too” exercise and then finally with your normal exercise. Again, this is just a brief run down of how I would approach this etude, if you would like to play for me for some feedback, book a lesson here!</image:caption>

<image:caption>This allowed me to keep better support for the large leaps and gave me some time to breathe. The next section gave me the most trouble because I started to run out of air and couldn’t quite catch them fast enough, but through the slow practice described above, I can figure out my pacing a little better. Another added benefit of cycling lines is that you learn to bridge phrases together better so you can actual practicing your breathing consistently. The tendency here is to start speeding up as it’s nothing but eighth notes for the eyes to see. I actually had to force myself to feel like I was dragging the first few bars to keep it feeling the same tempo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I noted a few places I took a breath at the end of the fifth line, so that I could crescendo at the beginning of the sixth line to help support those octave leaps. I causally decrescendo to the end as that felt like a more natural ending. The purpose of this etude is to test your technique at faster tempos, flexibility control, accuracy in both notes and a steady tempo. Beyond the notes, the toughest part will be creating a musical statement on such a technically driven etude, but the MOST IMPORTANT thing to focus on is clarity and tone! If you frack a note its not going to be the end of the world if you SOUND good doing it! If you would like more in-depth personal help book a lesson here!</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’ve also noted the shaping I would use through this section. Standard hairpin motion up and down, but decrescendoing to a relative mezzo forte two bars before the mf. The next section I kept as close to mf as I could as it was a bear for me to try and do in one breath. I still had to take sips of air every few beats to try and maintain a fullness in sound.</image:caption>

<image:caption>You will need a Powered USB hub (which plugs into the wall) that you connect the mic to directly via the mics USB. Next you will need a USB 3.0 Charger Cable A-Male to Micro-B that plugs into a USB to lightening adapter that then plugs into your phone. WHEW!! But now you have a better mic that you can manipulate in a room (that is what you are actually recording, the room) while catching HD video! The downside of this is all the cables, but it does work! I personally prefer this over a Shure MV88 since that is attached to the phone itself and will take sound whatever distance the phone is from you, which you may not like.</image:caption>

The biggest trap I found was going into the break from measures 29-32. I wanted to speed up and compress the eighth notes initially. <image:caption>This is our make or break section. Careful not to get too loud and keep it smooth and connected. There aren’t any valve tricks here to keep it anymore smooth than just basic positions. In my recording, the downbeat A in measure 17 was too much, and not centered, because I wanted to make a difference in volume, its not needed as long as you come to a nice piano in the phrase before.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I did play the F# on the side valve this run as an experiment, it was smooth and an ok sound for this passage. I would consider other alternative with as smooth as possible in mind. The final forte is on the highest note of the piece, so no need to over do that dynamic, just end on a decrescendo and you will be golden!</image:caption>
